As leaders, it can feel tempting—and more immediate—to focus on actions when guiding our teams. After all, actions are visible and measurable. But this approach often leads to unsustainable outcomes. Let me illustrate this with a simple example:
Imagine heading to the kitchen for a cookie from the cookie jar. Someone stops you and says, "You don’t need that cookie right before dinner." Their words might spark a range of thoughts:
- “But I want to!”
- “I’ll do what I want—I’m an adult!”
- “That’s none of your business.”
If all we do is focus on the action—slapping the hand away or inducing guilt—we haven’t addressed the deeper issue. What we’ve taught is simply to avoid getting caught. We haven’t created an opportunity to explore why the cookie might not be the best choice at that moment.
This scenario mirrors the challenges we face as leaders. Focusing only on actions leads to temporary fixes, but addressing beliefs and experiences creates lasting transformation. By fostering understanding and connection, we guide our teams toward deeper insights and sustainable growth.
